Colour behaves differently too. Saturated accents vibrate against dark grounds, so one well‑chosen hue does the work that five did in daylight.
Contrast is a budget
Spend it on what matters. Let secondary text recede, keep primary text calm rather than stark, and save full brightness for the one thing you want someone to do.
